Hello Teachers
This unit is created because with Common Core Standards, grammar and punctuation is an ongoing skill that continues from the 6th grade. I find in my classes that there is very little time to focus on the grammatical aspects. I also feel that students are exposed to grammar and punctuation at a very early age, and have the exposure needed to complete this assignment as a self-paced Webquest. The independence and real-world aspects of this assignment makes it an authentic. It is an engaged learning project that has a LoTi Level of 5.
Using this as a beginning Unit, the teachers could revisit this project during the poem unit. Allow the students to write poems as songs and record them using Movie Maker and Audacity. This would be a great, fun, authentic project that the students would love.
When differentiating this project, maybe change the length of the letter for the students and create letters on the reading levels of each child.
